EmiMineThe carbon ledger for mining home page
About

Built by NCEL at KNUST

EmiMine comes out of research at the Net-Zero Carbon Emission Lab, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi: the first sector-wide greenhouse-gas account of Ghana's mining industry, artisanal and industrial.

Why EmiMine exists

Ghana is Africa's largest gold producer. Its mining footprint in 2022 was about 4.7 Mt CO₂e, 4.8 times the line labelled as mining in the national inventory. Most of the difference is not missing: it is in the totals under other labels, and the largest part is land cleared for mining.

EmiMine turns that finding into tools: for mines to measure and reduce, for agencies to label mining without double counting, for transparency bodies to compare mines, and for other countries to do the same.

Where it stands

  • The national account (GhaMEM) is in a manuscript under review; the land method is a draft paper.
  • National data are cleared by KNUST IPUK/OGR and published under CC BY 4.0; the code is AGPL-3.0.
  • Organisations join by invitation while the platform is being completed.

Principles

  • Transparent methods and open national data.
  • Uncertainty always shown.
  • Your organisation's data are yours.
  • No artisanal or informal site is ever located.
